Invisible Things Lab

Invisible Things Lab (ITL) is a privately held company based in Berlin, Germany. ITL has supported Qubes OS development from the beginning of the project in 2010 to the present. The company’s primary source of revenue is security research and development.

Freedom of the Press Foundation

Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and defending public interest journalism. It leads the development of SecureDrop, an open source whistleblower submission platform used by more than 50 media organizations around the world to securely accept documents from anonymous sources. FPF uses Qubes OS in the development of an integrated SecureDrop Workstation.

Mullvad

Mullvad is a VPN service that keeps users' online activity, identity, and location private. With a fundamental belief in privacy as a universal right, Mullvad's ultimate goal is to make Internet censorship and mass surveillance ineffective.

The Mullvad team has relied on Qubes in its day-to-day operations since early 2015. To support its continued development, Mullvad made a generous donation to Qubes in 2017.

Boris is a Qubes OS user who is thankful for the hard work put in by the Qubes team and who wants to set a positive example that encourages others to donate to this worthwhile project.

Whonix

Whonix is a desktop operating system designed for advanced security and privacy. Whonix mitigates the threat of common attack vectors while maintaining usability. Online anonymity is realized via fail-safe, automatic, and desktop-wide use of the Tor network. A heavily reconfigured Debian base is run inside multiple virtual machines, providing a substantial layer of protection from malware and IP address leaks. Commonly used applications are pre-installed and safely pre-configured for immediate use. The user is not jeopardized by installing additional applications or personalizing the desktop. Whonix is under active development and is the only operating system designed to be run inside a VM and paired with Tor. The developers of Qubes and Whonix are cooperating. While Whonix is an independent Linux distribution, it has been integrated into Qubes OS as a system called Qubes-Whonix.

Open Technology Fund

Open Technology Fund (OTF) is a United States government-funded program of Radio Free Asia, whose stated mission is to "support open technologies and communities that increase free expression, circumvent censorship, and obstruct repressive surveillance as a way to promote human rights and open societies."

OTF has funded a number of improvements to Qubes, including better accessibility and user experience, integration of Whonix, and improved hardware compatibility. Visit the Qubes funding page on OTF’s website for more information.

Access Now

Access Now is an international human rights organization whose stated mission is to “defend and extend the digital rights of users at risk around the world.” Beginning in 2015, Access Now generously agreed to provide staff time to help manage the Qubes OS project.

NLnet Foundation

NLnet Foundation is a recognized philanthropic nonprofit foundation based in the Netherlands and whose stated mission is "to promote the exchange of electronic information and all that is related or beneficial to that purpose."

In 2016, the NLnet Foundation provided a grant to the Qubes project to support improvements in automated build processes, Debian template packaging, networking and privacy, and hardware compatibility.
